Hawks acquire C Brendan Morrison for D Brian Connelly
Jan 28 2012 01:57 AM | Ton in Transactions
According to Tim Sassone, the Blackhawks have acquired center Brendan Morrison from Calgary for minor league defenseman Brian Connelly.
Morrison has appeared in 28 games this season for the Flames, scoring 4 goals as well as adding 7 assists. As a center, the 36-year old has won 50.3% of his face-offs while having an average of 13:44 TOI/G for the Flames.
"Whatever the team wants me to do, that's what I'll do. I've played with some high end wingers before [Iginla, Naslund] and found success. I think I still can be counted on." said Morrison, "I'll be helpful wherever I can: special teams, 5 on 5, any situation."
Earlier this season, Bowman eluded to the fact that he would be searching for a center similar to the qualities that Morrison brings. It remains to be seen whether or not Morrison will play on the 2nd or 3rd line, but given the Blackhawks needs they may give him a legitimate chance to be a top-six player in Chicago.
"Ideally, I’d like to find a center-man. It doesn't have to be a top center-man, but somebody that can play and complement top players"
Morrison has complied 200 goals along with 401 assists (601 points) in 923 career games. He has appeared in 58 career playoff games notching 8 goals and 29 points.

Depth wise a good move, but what, who and where the Roster is corrected could be the question. Not a 2nd line center but it would allow Kruger to go to the 4th and allow Bolland to stay on the 2nd.
Would suck if it means Shaw or Hayes is going back down though.

Well considering we gave up very little to get him, I approve of this.
Connelly was never going to get a chance here and his value right now is probably higher than it ever will be in the Chicago system. Case in point, we traded a minor league player that would never get a chance here for a productive 3rd line C.

And you get your wish Bolland to say on the 2nd line. And I must admit tony if he continues his play there like the other night, you will have been right.
I like. Gave up a prospect for proven NHL vet center.
Proven is right. Guy is over the hill. Hawks just got slower. Hopefully he's a better "veteran pickup" than Pisani was last season. Can he still kill penalties? Is he healthy? Guy has played like half the games this season. I'll remain cautiously optimistic.
You sure I get my wish? I bet they'll give Morrison a legitimate shot to play on the 2nd line... by legitimate I mean do everything in their power to keep Bolland on the 3rd line.
I'll rephrase, the only way I like this deal is if Bolland is the 2nd line C from here on out, but chances are he won't be. So Morrison will be a disappointment due to the fact that he will be forced to play a role he is not fit to play anymore.
For what it's worth, the Hawks gave up very little for this to be a risk. He has a month to prove himself or the Hawks can still find someone else.

This is my fear as well. They tried it with Bruno and it failed. I hope they don't try it with Morrison as well.
Pez, I don't think this made the Hawks slower... but it did make them smaller, weaker.
I hope they grab a big physical LW if they're going to acquire a small, weak center.
The positive is Morrison is a good two-way player, decent at face-offs, and can still contribute offensively (just not at the same production as 5 years ago)... if he plays on the 3rd/4th line he'll fit better than Madden did.

I'm concerned about his health and abilities now but the bigger issue with me is he is a genuine asshole. I can't believe Bowman just brought this dick head onto my hockey team!!!
I dislike Morrison so much that I hope he fucking breaks his leg the first game. I would rather go with what we have now than bring this asshole onto the club and into the dressing room.
Bad move Bowman. I don't even need to give it time. Next to Matt Cooke Morrison was the biggest asshole on the Canucks roster back in the West Coast Express days. Even a bigger dick than Bertuzzi.
I'm totally disappointed in this. I will never warm up to this prick. This is nearly as bad as if it were Modano coming here. Enjoy one of the biggest jerks in hockey Hawks fans.

He's slow too. He's coming off a knee injury, and has hardly played this season.(13 minutes per game, 28 games). He's also 36. Make no mistake, this makes the Hawks slower too.
they won teh Cup with Madden the 4th line Center. He's no slower than Madden. I like the Depth it gives them at C.
TCD just like with Carcillo, he gets a chance. No one is as big of dick as Bertuzzi. He should be in jail.
I also think Bolland is going to get a chance to stay where he is, although Morrison was playing some with Iginla so I'm sure he could hang with Hossa.

+1 on that RK. If TCD is right and is a threat to the locker room, it makes me think twice though. Remember Morrison was the one to bad-mouth the Hawks earlier this year when we played Calgary, called us classless.
Either way it cost us a prospect we would never use, it's worth the risk. So far I'd grade this trade as a C for Bowman, but we'll have to see how this plays out because if other moves are made it'll make more sense why Bowman went this route. It's not a bad place to start a day over 1 month of the deadline.

I simply do not like him as a person for reasons im not going to get into. What he does on the ice will not sway me into liking him even if he scored a cup winning goal.
fuck it... im totally upset right now. There are only a few people I genuinely would never want or wanted in a Hawks jersey...Morrison is one of them. RK if Bertuzzi should be in jail (which I agree with) Morrison should be in there also as an accomplice. The current state of Canucks douchebagery and the dickness was born out of Cooke, Morrison and Bertuzzi.
I can't cheer for him no matter what. I'm shocked and upset that he is now a Hawk. I can't believe this has happened.
P.S. Not half way through writing this my boss called who is a season ticket Canucks fan and who never says a bad word about a current or ex Canucks player (we have good fights about that).....I was just laughed at and wowed that the Hawks would go after the prick ass. Even my boss agrees he is a dickhead.

sure he was the whiner calling them out for chirping to him after he tore his ACL. What ever, he's now a Hawk and I give him a chance. I also understand TCD's apprehension as he comes from Canuck land. But with the locker room here, primarily a guy named Toews, it doesn't worry me. Not to mention another guy named Odonnell.
Locker room douchbaggery will not be tolerated IMO.

Was the 4th line center really an issue though? I think Mayers has been just fine in that role. I just don't understand bringing in a guy like Morrison, even for depth. What does he offer the Hawks that they don't already have?
Toews
Bolland
Kruger
Mayers
So instead we will have
Toews
Bolland
Kruger
Morrison?
Is Morrison really an upgrade over Mayers at 4C? I don't know about that. Plus, Morrison is small, and not a physical player. My worst fear is that the Hawks try to use this guy as a #2 center. He's not even close to that at this point in his career. The Hawks already have better options for 2C.... and frankly, Morrison isn't an upgrade over any of the CURRENT Hawks' centers. Even more so if you decide to slot Sharp there.
You get him for guy who would never get a chance in a Hawk uniform, but has value elsewhere, then do it.... low-risk. He either plays well enough to stick in the line-up or, at worst, he's a healthy scratch.
I think Mayers is better in his Wing position, plus I think he'd be an upgrade there.
Q is not going to slot Sharp there, and Sharp does not want to be slotted there.
I think it'll be JT-Bolland-Morrison-Kruger.

Exactly. It didn't cost anything nor has it made the team worse in any way shape or form.
I also don't think many 2nd line Centers will be availabe, and if there are 4-5 teams will and can have a bidding war. Point is we won the Cup with Madden as the fourth line Center. We had DEPTH in that position. This gives them Depth, with NATURAL Centers, not stop gaps that really don't like playing Center.

Hope so. Bollands a much better option at 2nd line than Morrison. I would bury Morrison on the 4th myself. I have to get over this feeling I have and try to accept it...it's so bloody hard. If I see Morrison playing second line center ahead of a more talented and useful Bolland then I will be extremely upset.
lol it's going to be so hard seeing him in the jersey..so hard.
Hawks also won the cup with Sharp as the second line center. Just saying.
I think Mayers is a better 4C than Kruger. Yeah, I said it. I don't like Kruger at center. Guy can't win a fucking faceoff. Mayers, meanwhile, for not being a center, is 55% in the circle. And even. Kruger is negative. I am MEH about this trade until I see Morrison play.

I was like that with Carcillo, but I gave him a chance, and he proved me wrong. Sometimes the drive for a Cup do strange things to players, or athletes trying to go for a Championship.
All it is is a depth move at C. No way is Mayers a better Center than Morrison. Mayers is NOT a Center, playing out of position. He hasn't been bad because of the way he plays, but the fact is he's not a Center. Just like Kaner.
Sometimes the small moves Championship teams make are key. This could be one of them.
remember fraser, who centered that line most of the year, get benched for Madden in the Finals.
No biggie "IF" he can stay healthy. Unless like Tony said they try to force him on the 2nd line, which I can't see them doing. Well it's Q so maybe I could LOL!

Madden is ten times the player and leader that Morrison is though. Apples to oranges.
Yea I know they won the Cup with Sharp there. And eventually some how I see him being back there before the year is out. But this can't hurt them.
I also think Stan is far from done. I bet he's still looking at a Dman or TWO and maybe a top 6 foward if possible. Month left to go.
and I disagree about the Madden comment and I also think the numbers do as well.
