Blackhawks Plan To Bolster Defense
Since sending Rostislav Olesz to the Rockford IceHogs, along with moving Rob Klinkhammer to the Ottawa Senators, the Blackhawks have reared their heads into the rumor mill.
Although they have nearly $6.5 million in cap space, the Blackhawks have not shown any intentions to spend to the limit.
WHO'S ON THE BLOCK
The Carolina Hurricanes have expressed interest in moving a few pieces from their blue-line. GM Jim Rutherford has gone on the record with his displeasure in defenseman Tomas Kaberle, clearly looking to move his 3-year $4.25 million contract.
"He's still a real good player, I don't know what's going to end up happening here with him now, because we have the young kid, Faulk, the 19-year-old, who we're real happy about. He may very well get lost in the shuffle here. I don't know where it goes from there. I know there's some teams interested in him, but they're not quite sure they want to take on all the money, so that becomes a little more complicated.
"He got off to a slow start, totally by his own doing. Now, he has to figure out how to get out of it, or he won't be playing with the Hurricanes long."
At this time, with Kaberle's contract it is doubtful the Blackhawks would make a pitch for the offensive defenseman.
Despite that fact, this doesn't mean Chicago and Carolina are unlikely to be trade partners this season. More-likely, the Blackhawks are looking at Tim Gleason, 28, the soon-to-be UFA with an easy cap hit of $2.75 million. Gleason could be a perfect fit for the Blackhawks, desperately in need of another defenseman in a shut-down role without threatening Nick Leddy's development in a more offensive role.
Even if Gleason isn't on the list, Carolina seems to be a likely partner with Bryan Allen in the mix as another defenseman they may consider parting with. The towering 6-5 physical defenseman is on the last year of his deal and would be another solid choice for the Blackhawks to solidify their core.
Another option to consider could be Cory Sarich, who has been spinning the wheels all across rumor mills with a perceived trade request away from the Flames. Doubtful the Blackhawks would have much interest in the physical defenseman mainly due to his staggering cap hit at $3.6 million. However, that expires at the end of this season leaving him to walk as a UFA anyway. One thing they will have to decide, is he better than O'Donnell, Lepisto, or Scott?
It's also possible that the Blackhawks could be making a play for the Islanders Mark Streit, but with another year remaining on his deal at a $4.1 million cap hit might hamper their interest. Regardless, unless the Islanders are out of playoff contention by the deadline it might be hard to justify trading their captain.
There are plenty of options for the Blackhawks if they want a defenseman, the problem is, there are many other teams in the same market. Tampa Bay and Columbus among the more desperate teams in need of defensive help.
Good news, the Blackhawks have a plethora of NHL-ready players they can afford to part with - many of them highly coveted throughout the league. It's only a matter of time before they pull the trigger to bolster their defense... who's it going to be?
Hawks need another right handed shot blueliner. I dont dislike hammer and leddy together but it would be better if leddy played with a right hander

Not sure about that. What's the biggest different this year verses last on D? Campbell. Yup.
Last year of his contract...28yrs old...2.75mil hit (for full season...1.8mil roughly left this year)
May not cost much to trade for him

I've always disliked Gleason as a Rangers fan but I'd sure as hell love him on the Hawks. For some reason I've always thought he was much older than 28.
2.75mil for a player like that? Sign me up.

Agreed 100%. Gleason would be perfect.

Not sure, Cullimore had it cursed, then Sopel came and salvaged it, then Cullimore was back, now its Montadors problem. Its tough to pinpoint, but Cullimore donning it most recently definitely puts some sort of curse on it.
Really Montador needs to find his role here, he's shown the reason why we picked him up in more than a few games, but like the entire team he hasn't been consistent. I'd like to have him take up the role as a Brooks Orpik type D man, someone who finishes every check no matter what, right now Carcillo and Seabrook are about the only players we have like that...............Bickell doesn't count cause he sucks.

Agreed, I feel like Hammer is underrated by many because he doesn't show up on the scoresheet.
I will admit though, he has had some trouble protecting the front of the net this year. I like his game but he needs to get better in that area, keep his head on a swivel and protect the house.

Don't think Tallon would take kindly to taking away the 3rd most productive D-man in the league. Also a nice 13 PPP's.
I struggle thinking what player out there would help us on the blueline. Gleason would I am sure.
To be honest, and I hate saying this, it's not only blueliners that have been an issue. Crawford has to play better than he has as a whole. I think if you get a little bit more out of Crawford the goals against stats wouldn't be so bad. We would probably be hovering around the middle of the pack (which is acceptable when you have the offensive numbers we have).
So it's not just the blueline. Craw has to take some of the heat also. Sophmore slumping a little he is.
'Canes trade chatter

Carolina Hurricanes

The general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes appears fairly optimistic about his chances of dealing a certain veteran defenseman this season.
As reported by Elliotte Friedman of the CBC, Jim Rutherford seems confident he will be able to trade Tomas Kaberle "in a month or two as long as the defenceman starts playing better". Fortunately for the Hurricanes, it's not like the experienced blueliner can play that much worse.
Rutherford has confirmed he's talking to other teams about potential deals at present. Along with forward Tuomo Ruutu, Kaberle is considered a top candidate for trade -- if another squad can be convinced to take on the lion's share of his thre-year, $12.75 million contract. Defensemen Tim Gleason and Bryan Allen could also attract some attention around the league.
Seriously
And the Canes as a whole suck. So Although Kaberle hasn't been playing great and has underperformed he has no one to really work with in Carolina. I don't want the guy here at all at the price tag but to put all the blame on Kaberle for the Canes woas is crazy. Their star player is what -11 and forgot how to score? Kaberle can still play but if you put top 2 blueliner labels on him then that's a badly ran team. Canes should have known what they were getting with Kaberle esp after watching him under perform in the playoffs last year for a cup winning team. Kaberles best years are behind him he is a support offensive blueliner best suited for the #4 spot tops and for powerplay minutes (and not even sure if he can do that well anymore).
GLEASON AND RUUTU!!!!!
Brunette better give him 15 back!!

Even if Kaberle were here at almost twice less, Q wouldn't coach him right. Just look at what he's doing as it is with the wrong kind of coach.

If Kaberle were in his prime, I'd be a tad more excited. I find it funny that after he leaves, the Leafs are good again.
