Total Collapse in Edmonton: What Kind of Fan Are You?
Feb 03 2012 05:11 PM | PuckPowWow in Puck PowWow
Who cares what the score was. Last night was kind of funny in some ways, and there are a few different vantage points to look at it from. We could chalk it off to something as simple as: The Hawks just can't win against the Oilers this year. We could also be angry, pointing at continual fails that have been festering throughout the year. Some might choose goaltending, others might sway towards defense first, and some might see the issues as a big picture issue. Is one big trade the answer? Or, is this just a tiny blip on the screen towards Winnersville, no need for change?
I have started asking a question of myself, and it is partly related to other fan's reactions to my views. What kind of a fan am I? Optimistic, angry, jaded, or excited? Am I a realist, looking at the cold hard facts from a semi-knowledgeable perspective, or over thinking things?
Even though many have often disagreed with me vehemently about a great many things with regards to the Hawks, these things have a habit of coming to complete fruition at some point. If you have been following my writing long enough, you might see that pattern.
I stand behind my critiques on coaching, and it is getting harder and harder to argue against them. The power-play is still the achilles heel of this team. The team defense a constant struggle. The lack of system-play is never there to bail them out of a rut. The consistency and preparedness often a big question, and the day to day choices a source of criticism.
I made the point a few games back that there was no longer a question as to who was the starting goaltender of the team, and yet the wrong choice continues to be made every game. I am sorry, and I really wanted him to get out of his hole, but Crow is not the guy for this season. There just aren't enough games left to get him confident. Sure, defense was an issue, and I will get to that in a sec, but Crawford allowed 2 goals that were absolutely his fault, and pretty bad, and changed the momentum of the game twice.
It was sometime early in the second when I turned to wife and said, "the defense is starting to look tired, I wonder why that could be?" My biggest gripe about the loss to Vancouver was how Q rolled the defensive pairings and how much ice Keith and Seabs saw. I said it would haunt them and it did. Players standing around watching pucks go into their net, and taking stupid penalties is a fatigue thing, and mental prepartion concern.
Unfortunately, the fact that Mayers has scored in back-to-back games will be completely forgotten. The great play by Kane to steal the puck in the neutral zone and hit Sharp for a one-timer lost in the sea of terrible neutral zone play by the Hawks. If you ask me, this is actually where they really lost the game, and that is after playing great in the neutral zone in Vancouver.
Shaw has done a pretty darn good job of drawing penalties in his short time with the Hawks, but who cares because the Hawks can't convert on the power-play. The shorty put together by Toews and Sharp holds no candle to the 8 points and 4 goals racked up by Gagne, and the great start completely overshadowed by the total collapse of the Chicago Blackhawks once again in Edmonton. And once again, I bring up that word consistency.
The rumors floating around about a trade involving Tim Thomas and Stalberg are just that, rumors. I am not so sure that any one trade will fix this team. I am however becoming quite certain that a change in coaching will (if the right coach is found). There is no control here. You could blame the players themselves for not providing their own leadership, but there is a reason we have coaches.
It might not seem like it, but I am a highly excited and optimistic Blackhawks fan. I would not be writing any of this if I was not. This fact is a big part of why I point more fingers in the direction of team guidance, rather than at the players themselves. I expect a turnaround, and whether you choose to realize it or not, the Hawks have not been the best team this year. Yes, they still stand well enough in the standings and in a really tough division, but last night, and a great many other nights have been blatant examples of some fairly large holes in their game.
On a good note, the Predators figured out how to finally lose a game last night. This loss by the Hawks doesn't hurt anything really. Unless something drastic happens soon, I think we can forget about the Hawks winning the division and conference for that matter, but they can still make a great run through the playoffs. We just have to wait and see what changes may come.

I'm the kinf of fan that ufes sfellcheck.
Not really. His post actually made a lot of sense. Last night, Seabrook and Keith had both played close to 20 minutes in the first two periods. After Keith played 30 minutes in Vancouver, and Seabrook played 28 minutes. I don't give a fuck who you are, those minutes pile up and you start making mistakes. They are logging too many minutes. And that goes for Leddy as well. Leddy should not be playing 25 minutes a game, and he should DEFINITELY not be killing penalties. Why has Montador not been used on the PK at all this season? He was a mainstay in the Buffalo PK last season, and he's much more suited towards the PK than the undersized 21 year old offensive defenseman. O'Donnell is also a guy that has ALWAYS killed penalties. OD and Montador are much better options on the PK than Nick fucking Leddy.
I'm a seriously fucking annoyed fan that one night this team looks like it could beat everyone and then the next night look like columbus would beat them.
This whole season I have said to my buddies that are hawks fans that it doesn't feel like we are/were a team that is competing to for first in the league.

So the PP sucks at 10th in the league?
<- This fan, concerned.
Not suicidal, not condemning, not throwing in the towel, just concerned.

PK sucks.
Yes. It is completely inconsistent and more often than not fails to generate any scoring chances. It also struggles to build any momentum, since most of the time it's just the Hawks chasing the puck after the other team clears it. The Hawks cannot gain the zone on the PP to save their lives. The entire setup is flawed. With the talent on this team, they should be right up there with Vancouver and Philly at 20%+ Do you ever watch the game, or just pull stats out of your ass?
Oh, and RK said I should ask you where you played pro hockey.
Oh, and RK said I should ask you where you played pro hockey.
Ha...I played in the ever so talented ECHL...then briefly in the CHL...how about you? I also played D1, a year in the USHL and prep school. You can tell RK I know people too.
I do watch the game...and don't just base my opinion on if I like a player or coach - I assume they suck and bash them. I think the Hawks could have won 8-4 last night, but people here would still bitch about giving up 4. If not for Dubnyk...it very well could have been that score reversed.

What are opinions on giving two minors to the Oil at the end of the first after coming out strong?
Oh..and I coached a bit too in the USA Hockey Developmental camps as well for about 10yrs, if you wanted to know my coaching history?
Very cool. What ECHL team? I know a few guys that have played there, and one that is playing for the Alaska Aces right now that I play with in the summer. I never played past midget travel/high school(had a kid at 17)
I put the game last night pretty much completely on Crawford, so we're not disagreeing here. He has been bad for a while now. As I said, the Hawks put up nearly 50 shots. If they had a shooter tutor in net, they probably win that game. I actually like Q, I just don't think he or Kitchen are very good coaches. They do not adjust to the players on their roster and I can't stand the favorites/doghouse crap Q pulls.

"Total Collapse of the Heart" would have been my headline...

I was actually just wondering what team you played for. But, having coached, have you EVER seen this collapsing box shit that the Hawks are using in the defensive zone work successfully? I mean, anywhere? And the fucking clownshoes 1+3 triangle PK? I know that shit was ALL Kitchen when he was in Florida... and it's just as useless as the Hawks defensive zone system. I don't understand how giving the opposing defense time and space to bomb shots from the point is ever a good idea. The shit I see goes against everything I have ever been taught, and everything I have ever seen watching hockey. Nobody I talk to can seem to figure it out either. It's just fucked.
(I PMed you)
I hate the PK...hate the way D cover lanes to block shots instead of tying people up. But it's kind of taken over the last 8+ years. They seem to rely on blocking shots too much. It's not just the Hawks...but every team's style. I think the philosophy is to not take yourself out of the play by covering one person.

I think their Dzone coverage is good..when they stick to it. The Hawks do rely on stretch passes/flying the zone....did it better than anyone on the cup year and when on...puts a ton of pressure on the other team/when countering. When off...looks like...well....turnover city. WIth their speed on wings..Hossa, Kane, Stalberg, Sharp...I can see why they like it. Get them on the fly and go/attack.
To be honest...I've never been an all offensive go go go person. It's exciting...I'd rather do that then trap/play for the 1-0 games (NASH).
I think you'd agree that no matter how you're playing as a skater...when your goalie starts letting in weak goals, you try doing too much or not making mistakes. It's deflating when crap goes in, when you feel like you're playing well. I think it's happened often this year and unfortunately magnifies things or puts too much blame on others trying to do too much. Especially on the PK. I think players start thinking they can't let any shot through or have to block every pass.
They're definitely not playing their best - but they're not horrible.
The trade deadline can be interesting. I think they have as good as a chance as any team in their conference to win the cup. Doesn't look like it today...but I don't think this is the team that will be starting Game 1 of the playoffs. But any team with Toews, Kane, Hossa, Bolland, Sharp, Keith, Seabrook, Hjarllmarsson.....is going to be a bitch in a 7gm series.

Lol, so you mean, if not for a goaltender in net instead of a traffic cone, the Hawks would have won? Give me a break. Don't pretend this team got "robbed" by him.
The Hawks only burned themselves, no goaltender stole the show.
Pretend? Didnt he have like 45 saves? A few were pretty damn good too

Now this I can agree with, great post.
The PK is completely mind boggling. Especially using Leddy instead one of the third pairing veterans... A lot of teams play for the shot blocks, but I don't think there's a more passive team in the NHL than the Hawks on the PK. That's the biggest problem I think. If you watch videos of Florida when Kitchen is there, you see the exact same PK. That PK is ALL on Kitchen, and Q for letting it continue.
Look familiar?
Their D zone coverage is only good when they simplify things. I don't understand why the wingers are always coming so far down the boards, but it is constantly happening. For a team with so much speed, that relied on the stretch pass so much winning the cup, I don't understand why they aren't higher in the defensive zone.... It's as predictable as the sun rising and setting. The opposing forward comes out of the corner, crosses the goal line, and immediately you see a Hawk winger get sucked down low. Way too low. The puck is then cycled up top to the defense, they walk in and bomb a shot, and the onslaught ensues. Far too often you see the Hawks with 5 guys below the hash marks, and it just makes no sense. Not only does it leave the points wide open, it makes it extremely difficult to break out.
You're absolutely right about bad goaltending and the effect on the team. It completely sucks the life out of the team and it can compound the more the season goes on with trying to play the perfect game.

Vunerable? Absolutely. But he made some pretty big saves as well to keep it 2-0 and give his team a chance to get back into the game - which they did.
It's reminiscent to when they brought in Huet...and the team didn't play with the same confidence it did when Khabibulin was in net. I think they've been losing confidence in Crawford.
And as many disagree with playing Crawford as long of stretches as Q has (me included)...I understand why he is doing it. Crawford won the number 1 last year, had a good playoffs. Is signed for 3 years...and needs to get his game/reestablish it. Short term would be to play Emery more...but it may not help Craws psyche. I've never been the biggest Crawford fan, but I think he's earned the right to be given the long leash to get his game back....but I think he's not and hasn't been doing it all year. Just as Huet lost the team, Turco lost them, Crawford is in great danger in doing the same.
As far as Morrisson getting the time he's getting with Hossa/Sharp? I think its the right thing to do. Play him there and often right away to see what he can do/what they have. It's 3 weeks or whatever to the deadline. Play him there...if he clicks, great...if not...they have time to see what else they can get. He's not costing squat.

I understand giving Morrison a CHANCE between Hossa and Sharp for a few games to see if he has anything left(not likely), but working the point on the PP? Come on... That's just clownshoes.
I don't get why he gets so much time to prove it, but everyone else is yanked in less than a period if he doesn't think they are working?
That's Q. Don't try to understand it. Same reason he hates some players, and loves others.
I think Q's lost the the players attention.
The PP is the A heel of the team? It's 10th, and 6th on the road.
PMXC, i thought you only played roller in Phoenix. Never knew you played pro hockey and coached...
I thought the PK was near tops in the league at one point in the season and the PP was bottom? I may be making that up. But if I am not (which I probably am) how do both swing like pendulums?
I really think I am making this up though.
I recall the Hawks PP being dismal through the regular season 2 years ago also but then turned into a killer during the playoffs. Same with the PK I believe (again I could totally be making this up sometimes I don't remember how to find my own home). Special teams seem to swing back and forth a lot in the NHL.
And I tend to believe a lot of PK consistency also comes with good goalkeeping. You have to have good goalkeeping for a good PK percentage also. It is the last line of defense and should be your strongest on the PK. Ours is not right now. So when you have a defensive system thats not working and a goalie whos not coming up with the big save then that = poop stick. POOP stick.
The pendulum will swing though once we get Brian Campbell back...we are getting him back right?

Nope, you are right TCD... the first few weeks of the season (maybe even month) the PK was on fire, PP was not.
