Stalberg: "I want to ... play the same way I have all year. If they didn’t think I did that in the first round, so be it." — he just sounds so arrogant there

Soon as Subban touched the ice for team Canada they lose. Why keep allowing these Subbans to play on the national teams?

Player Evaluation: Michael Frolik

Once Ton and I started getting to the lower paying players on the team, the articles seem to get a tad more difficult to write. Why? Well anybody who has watched Chicago hockey the last 3 years could write a somewhat substantial article on Kane and Toews. But, it’s the lesser “quality” guys who obviously don’t get as much attention that forces you to have to figure out what they actually bring to a team (for some of these guys it’s easier than others) like the Blackhawks.  One player who falls into this "enigma" category though, is Michael Frolik.

There is no doubt in my mind that Frolik possesses NHL talent. He’s already proven it in his early NHL career playing for the Florida Blackhawks Panthers. His first two seasons in the league saw Frolik put up point totals of 45 and 43 respectively. This was also playing along the likes of Stephen Weiss and Nathan Horton; one a 2nd line center at best, the other one of the better power forwards in today’s NHL (though Horton missed about 30+ games between those two seasons). While 40+ points is nothing to brag about, these are considered successful seasons in the NHL at the ages of 21 and 22 on a team like the Panthers. Then, after a somewhat productive half of a season, Frolik was traded to the Blackhawks for the ever so talented (sarcasm) Jack Skille. Frolik took a while to get his motor moving, but in the playoff series against the Canucks, he started to show signs of promise with 5 points in 7 games before the Hawks were eliminated (thanks a lot Campoli).

Last season though was quite the roller coaster ride for Frolik. You know the Dragon roller coaster that is at all the town fairs that just stays on the ground and goes around in a circle. Yeah, that kind of a “roller coaster” season. Frolik's game just never took off, and after playing decent minutes at the beginning of the season with no results he eventually was dropped to the 4th line and played sparingly while Viktor Stalberg played top line minutes. Come playoff time though, while Stalberg was stuck on his Dragon style roller coaster, Frolik ended up being given more minutes and actually produced in the 4 games he was dressed in.

Now, this next portion of this article is going to be my biased opinion as I think Frolik is better than he gets credit for. I no doubt agree that he was given every chance to perform but statistically did not rise to the occasion. Frolik was caught in a scoring slump that saw him get many chances but unfortunately could not capitalize. But, that still is not a reason to write him off. Frolik possesses great hockey sense and has a nose for the net. While he didn’t score as much, he still was able to get himself in position to get those chances, something some hockey players can’t even do right. Frolik has a long stride and good knee bend that, like Martin Havlat, gives him good boost of speed and makes him tough to knock off the puck. His stick skills are solid and he also protects the puck well. Frolik also isn’t afraid to go to the dirty area’s on the ice and grind it out.

Now, Frolik isn’t a bottom 6 player like he was last season. He’s not going to be much help for a team on the 4th line playing 8-10 minutes a night. He’s not your energy forward like a Hayes, Burish, Fraser or Shaw would be. With his style of play, he needs to get minutes and play with other talented guys in order for him to play to the best of his ability. Being centered on a line with Mayers and Hayes is not beneficial to him, or the team. Frolik has the talent, now it’s whether or not he gets the opportunity on the top 6 for him to prove to everyone he is as talented as his he has shown signs of in the past. After a season like last years, there is no doubt in my mind he comes back this season hungry to prove that he isn’t just a 4th line player. I'm going to base my prediction that Frolik comes back and makes his way back up on the top 6 at some point in the season.

PREDICTION: 70 GAMES PLAYED / 13 GOALS / 17 ASSISTS / 30 POINTS / MINUS-2

I don't really think he's a top-6 forward, but I do think he'll find a place on the 3rd line. At times, I really think him and Bolland work well. Maybe a line of Shaw/Bolland/Frolik would look good. I can see that being a very hard working/grind it out type of line that could drive opposing top lines bat-shit crazy. Even though Frolik had tough moments as far as production, you know he's going to work hard every shift and is solid defensively.

I think Stalberg should start out on one of the top two lines. Kane and Hossa at the RW, Toews and Sharp at center. Saad might get a legitimate chance at the other top LW spot. Maybe we'll see Frolik, Saad, Carcillo, and Stalberg rotate around depending on who's hot, but for the most part I think Frolik will stay on the 3rd line for most of the season.

One last thing, you said Frolik isn't an energy player, but I swear at times last season he gave off more energy due to his sheer effort than most on the team. Not to say he's a 4th line player but I think his efforts can give off a lot of energy to the team when it seems like they are down. You always know he's going to work hard every shift. Most people don't see that side of his game, but Frolik has an incredible work ethic and it translates on the ice.

I meant energy guy as in a 4th liner. No doubt he works hard when he's on the ice, but I don't see him being a grinder, I think on a lot of teams he's a top 6 skater. The Hawks unfortunately don't have the room for him.

Frolik skates hard - but does all his skating on the outside, from the dots to the boards.

He never skates with the puck in the tough areas, rarely drives the net with (or without) the puck. So it doesn't matter how hard he skates/works...just needs to do it in the goal scoring areas.

Um... I'll call bullshit. Plenty of goals inside the house on that clip. My favorite is the one at 0:49 where he is driving the net (something you claim he doesn't do) and beats two defensemen to score...

He holds his stick too tight a lot of times. His overall shooting ability hasn't really left me with much excitement and like others on the Hawks its a consistency issue more than anything else with me. I'm not a huge Frolik fan but willing to give him another shot. Really don't have any other choice. I would rather see Saad get the top two line minutes as I think there is more potential there. Less than impressed with Froliks offensive game when he has been paired with guys like Toews or Hossa or Kane. On the back end hes not that bad in my opinion. Better with guys like Bolland in short stretches before he disappears for long ones (the guy on the right side of the 3rd line hasn't been immune to this either so it hasn't helped). Some guys just don't pan out on certain teams but will on others. I'm getting that feeling with Frolik. I don't think the right chemistry has been found either...might not be on this club.

I don't think Frolik is a perimeter player... I always thought he was one of the guys that would bring the puck to the net without fearing consequence. His problem has always been his finishing ability, plain and simple. His shot is by far the worst on the team and his vision is something left to be desired when he has the puck. No one should question his work ethic or willingness to make a play or get to the scoring areas... his shot just sucks terribly.

I don't mind him. Goals or not, many times last year, I at least saw him working hard on the ice, when others seem to be either floating or waiting to make the highlight reel. 3rd line may be his place. I don't see him as a grinder, but I also don't quite see him in the top 6. Maybe a little line consistency would do him good, which won't happen here.

Yet out of the 5 major skills (Skating, passing, shooting, stickhandling, checking) your shot is one of the easier to work on and get better.

His shot may not be the hardest but he can definitely get stronger on the puck.

You showed his goals - when he's effective, he's around the net.

Unfortunately, he doesn't do that consistently. Show highlights of the 75 other games where he doesn't do jack shit. I'm sure there's tons of video on that.

But I guess it's because Q puts him on the 3rd line, with the guy thats supposed to be the 2nd line center (Bolland) that holds him back from producing more.

Let's fix some of your post.

I don't think Bolland is a 2nd line center. I think Bolland is a 3rd line center. I'm not in that following that thinks Bolland is better than he is. In my Bolland article, I said many people wonder why he was never given a chance on the 2nd. I explained why as he is a good 3rd line center.

Q gave Frolik his chance, and Frolik was in a slump and never got out of it.

I remember Frolik getting a lot of chances during the season, the main issue was he wasn't capitalizing on those chances. Yet, he still was creating the chances. Stalberg capitalized on his empty nets chances. I don't remember saying, and I could be wrong, man Frolik looks like shit. More like, man Frolik just can't finish.

Frolik has been in a slump since coming to Chicago. He has 8 goals in 91gms - 2 of them empty net goals. Out of his 58 career goals...4 are game winners (none of his 8 6 were game winners). And the empty net goals Stalberg has? 33 in 2 years as a Hawk, 9 gwg. So who's goals are "empty"?

Slumps don't last 91gms.

Maybe you didn't say Bolland should be the 2nd line center...but some think he is, just isn't given the chance. Just as some think Frolik should be a top 6 winger in the league. I thought Frolik would be better too when he came here. After near 100gms as a Hawk, he's been a disappointment, IMO

Stalberg game winners? Seriously!?

4 were against Columbus (Wins of 6-1, 5-2, 4-1, 5-2).
One was against the ever unstoppable Minnesota (5-2 win).
The only meaning one was the 5-4 win against Nashville.

So they don't count? Or don't mean anything? Got it.

What teams do they have to be against to matter?

How many did Frolik have against those 'bad' teams?

Give me a break pmxc, you know as well as I do that a goal scored on a shitty team in a blow out is a joke to be called the game winning goal. The 5th goal in a 5-4 win has more value than the 2nd goal in a 6-1 win.
