Blackhawks vs. Ducks: Battle of Juggernauts
Although this is the type of game that deserves all the hype it receives, keep in mind that the Blackhawks will charge into battle without Marian Hossa or Patrick Sharp, and the Ducks will be without their fresh $69 million dollar man, Corey Perry. Perry is serving the last game of his suspension for his high hit on Jason Zucker of the Minnesota Wild on March 12th.
With the loss of Hossa and Sharp, the Blackhawks will insert Dan Carcillo back into the line-up. Carcillo will slide up on the top line along side Jonathan Toews and Brandon Saad, but knowing Joel Quenneville there could be a lot of juggling tonight and there is a great chance you can see him stack that line by replacing Carcillo with Patrick Kane.
Anaheim is dominating their competition at the Honda Center this season; after dropping their first home game of the year the Ducks have won 12 straight games in Anaheim, 10 of them in regulation, and outscored their opponents 44-21 during that stretch. To put that in perspective: As well as the Blackhawks have played at home, their numbers don't stack up to that level, although their offense on the road can certainly compete with the Ducks home production.
Jonas Hiller will take the net for the Anaheim Ducks. Hiller has put together a 10-2-3 record this season along with a 0.911 save percentage and 2.53 goals against average. Overall, Hiller has been slightly more human than Viktor Fasth, so this could be a good thing for Chicago. On the flip side, Hiller has put together respectable numbers in his career against the Blackhawks (7-4-2, 0.927 SV%, 2.41 GAA) so its tough to say that the Blackhawks have a chance of exposing a weakness here.
If there is any area that the Blackhawks will want to expose, it's the Ducks 24th ranked penalty-kill. The bad news is, they are much better shorthanded when they are at home and they have killed 29 of their last 33 penalties (87.9%). Regardless, Anaheim remains as one of the most penalized teams in the league so Chicago should have every opportunity to produce on the powerplay.
SEASON SERIES (0-0-1) — The first game of the season series ended in a 3-2 shootout loss in Chicago. Viktor Fasth started for Anaheim and put together a 30 save effort and Corey Crawford one-upped him on the other end with a 31 save performance. Brandon Saad and Nick Leddy scored for the Blackhawks while Ryan Getzlaf and Andrew Cogliano matched the Blackhawks offensive effort, and eventually Corey Perry put away the game winning goal in the shootout.
IF HISTORY REPEATS — Jonathan Toews leads all dressed Blackhawks with six goals and 16 points in 19 career games against Anaheim. Patrick Kane leads the team with 12 assists in 21 games. Duncan Keith leads the defense with 12 points in 29 career games. Corey Crawford owns the best record (5-3-1) against Anaheim, but Ray Emery has an impressive stat line (0.938 SV%, 1.97 GAA). Over Crawford's career, he has a 0.918 save percentage and 2.13 goals against average vs. Anaheim.
THE BOTTOM LINE — The Blackhawks will really have to dig deep without two of their biggest threats in Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp. Both players combined have contributed 30 goals in 53 career games against the Ducks, and that's impossible to replace, even if you compare it to a combination of any duo currently on the Blackhawks. There isn't a lot of cracks in the Ducks foundation, but this is a match-up that is extremely important for Dave Bolland to get his wheels going and get back to "The Rat" mentality, and potentially frustrate the Ducks into taking penalties. Andrew Shaw has done a very good job in that role lately, and Dan Carcillo returning will help, but for the Blackhawks to win this one they will need that agitating factor from every line. It's likely that the Blackhawks can't match the Ducks physicality, healthy or not, but they won't have to if they play smart and grind it out. The Ducks third line has been hot on the offensive end so either the Blackhawks will need to cool them down or find a way to match the offensive production with their depth scorers... or maybe it comes from the defense: Nick Leddy, Duncan Keith, and Brent Seabrook will have to be more involved in the offense with Hossa and Sharp out, and that is perhaps one advantage that the Blackhawks have over the Ducks.
All-in-all, I would give a slight edge to the Ducks at this point in time, but that isn't to suggest that the Blackhawks can't win tonight. This is definitely one game that can't be decided on paper. Don't miss it.
MILESTONE WATCH — Dave Bolland: 98 A (2 from 100) ... Johnny Oduya: 99 A (1 from 100); 492 GP (8 from 500) ...
INJURY REPORT — Marian Hossa did not participate in the morning skate and will be scratched, still remains day-to-day ... Patrick Sharp is still out with an upper-body injury (separated shoulder) but he is skating on his own ...
